The Zaanse Schans is a quiet, traditional hamlet on the banks of the river Zaan. The area takes visitors back in time and gives an insight into how a typical Zaanse village could have looked during the 17th and 18th centuries. There is a cluster of windmills, traditional green wooden houses, hump-backed bridges, tradesmen’s workshops and some small museums. Boat trips are offered along the river, and there are several restaurants in the village.
