Map
Waardenburg Castle was built in 1265, and has had a long and bloody history. The famous sorcerer Dr Johann Georg Faust once lived in the castle, and there are many ghost stories and legends associated with his time as the owner. Some people believe that the castle is haunted. During the Second World War the castle was occupied by German troops. The castle took a lot of damage during the war, and many of the buildings were destroyed. Today, the estate is owned by the ’Friends of Gelre Castle Foundation’.
