The Fort in Vijfhuizen is one of several forts that make up the Defence Line extending for more than 130KM around Amsterdam. The Defence Line was constructed over the course of several decades between 1880 and 1920. The buildings that form part of the line are now UNESCO protected monuments, as a testament to Dutch ingenuity and their ability to control the water and use it to their own advantage – flooding strategic areas in times of war, and protecting the land from the water in times of peace.
