The Valkenburg Castle is the only mountain-top castle in the Netherlands. It was heavily damaged in 1672 on the orders of William III after he re-captured it from French invaders. Restoration work began in 1921, and is still underway. During the restoration, a number of underground escape passages were discovered, which form part of the ’Fluwelengrot’ – guided tours of these passages are available.
