The Uithoorn Fort is one of several forts that was constructed during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The forts were a part of a defence network, designed to protect Amsterdam and the surrounding regions from invasion. The forts quickly fell out of use when heavy artillery and explosives became a common part of warfare. Today, the Uithoorn Fort is a Unesco protected monument, and visitors the the fort can learn about the construction of the defence line, and its brief role in Dutch history.
