The Westerhuis was built in 1862 for Mr De Dijkstra. The mill stayed in the De Dijkstra family until 1953, when it was sold to the town of Winschoten. The mill has been recently restored, but the interior has been kept as close as possible to an authentic 19th century mill, with lots of original tools and machinery. The mill is currently cared for by Mr B. Oomkens. Tours of the Westerhuis are available by appointment only.
