The Weddermarke is a traditional polder mill that was built in 1898 by the mill-makers J. and L. Wiertsema to replace an older mill that had been destroyed by a fire in 1874. The mill was used to drain the 424 hectare Weddermarke polder. Windmills are a very important part of Dutch history. Using a combination of drainage mills, locks, and dykes, Dutch people were able to reclaim large amounts of habitable land from the sea. Tours of the Weddermarke mill are available by appointment only.
