The Town Cave

The Gemeentegrot, or ’town cave’ is a large cave underneath the town of Valkenburg. The caves were created by the Romans, when they mined the ground to get the marl they required for their building work. The caves are a fascinating sight, you can see how natural conditions have changed over time, and look at the remains of things that were built by fugitives, who have, throughout the centuries, used the caves as hiding places.
