The Amsterdam Defence Line was built after the German-French War of 1870. It replaced the original defence line which had been built at the beginning of the century. The first line had proven very important in the defence of the city, but was too close to the boundaries of the city to provide protection from the more modern artillery. Work on the ’Stelling van Amsterdam’ began in 1880, and took almost 40 years to complete.
