The Mill Mountain was built in 1854 for the miller J. D. Buurma, as a successor to an older post mill that had proven inefficient because the sails were too low and small to catch enough wind for the mill to work. The mill was sold to the town of Winschoten in 1956. Today, the mill is used to grind barley and other grains. The mill is open to the public by appointment only.
