The Hilmahuistermolen was built in 1868. It is a traditional polder mill owned by the Westerkwartier Mill Foundation. The mill was used to drain water from the Hilmahuistermolenpolder – a 240 hectare area of land. The Hilmahuistermolen suffered heavy damage during a storm in 1972. Restoration work was carried out between 1975 and 1978. The mill is still in working order, and can be seen in operation on days when the weather is suitable. The mill is open to the public by appointment only.
