The Grote Kerk in Veere has had a difficult history. It was constructed in 1560, and then severely damaged by fire around a hundred years later. It was promptly restored, but much of its original decoration was lost during the restoration. Over the next few hundred years it was occupied by British troops, and converted into a barracks by Napoleons army. The stained glass windows were removed and bricked up, and the nave all but destroyed. The church still has its impressive 42-metres high tower, which offers a great view of the surrounding area.
