The ruins of the old Fort Uitermeer can be found just outside of the town of Weesp. The fort was a part of the ’New Dutch Water Line’, a defence line constructed in the 1840s, and intended to defend the land around the river Vecht. The ruins are not aesthetically pleasing, but the building was an important part of Dutch military history, and visitors can learn a lot about the Water Line, and the role that the forts played in defending the country.
