The Fort at Hinderdam is a former Dutch fort that dates back to the late 17th century. It was originally intended for use as a defensive fort, and to control traffic on the Vecht. The fort was once a part of the Old Holland Waterline, and was updated when the New Waterline was built. It later became a part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. The advent of long-ranged artillery and powerful explosives caused the fort to be closed in the mid 20th century. Today, the Fort at Hinderdam is owned by Natuurmonumenten – a Dutch society for the preservation of monuments and forestry.
