The Fort Aan De Drecht is a part of the defence line which was constructed between the years of 1880 and 1920. The Fort was intended to house several hundred soldiers, who could defend key parts of Dutch infrastructure such as farm land and the rail transport system. The forts fell out of use when heavy artillery and bombs became a more common part of warfare. The forts are now protected monuments under the Unesco heritage scheme.
