The Westerse Mill, or, ’Western Mill’ was built in 1862 to replace an older mill that had been destroyed in a fire. The mill originally served the Western Water Mill Polder – a 662 hectare area of land. The mill was upgraded to use a steam-powered pump in 1878, and then had a diesel engine added in 1964. Today, the mill serves as a backup for more modern pumps. The mill is open to the public every Sunday.
