The Star in Rotterdam has a long history – the original mill was built by Isaac Hioolen in 1829, and was called ’The New Star’ – this mill burned down in a fire in 1866, and was replaced by a new snuff mill, which was also almost totally destroyed in a fire in 1962. The destruction of that mill caused the end of the snuff making industry in Rotterdam. The mill that stands there today was built from those ruins – only a small part of the original structure remains. Today, The Star is ran on an occasional basis to produce spices and snuff. Tours of the mill are available.
