The Monnikenmolen was built in 1857, to replace a much older post mill that dated back to the late 14th century. The mill was built by Evert van Benthem, who wanted to be able to use the mill to produce multiple products at the same time. The mill was converted to use an electric motor in 1927. Today, the mill is owned by the St. Jansklooster Monnikenmolen Foundation, and is home to a small visitors centre.
