The Kaai corn mill was built in 1755 by the Lemsterwaterpoort. In 1870, the mill was bought by Daniel Ruurd Westra, and was later passed down to his son, Fedde Westra. Since then, the mill has had several owners. In 1929, a group of Sloten residents petitions the Korenmolen Association for funding to restore the mill. The name of the mill, ’Kaai’, is Frisian for Key, and is intended to symbolise that the mill is the key to the city. The Kaai mill is open to the public.
