The Strijkmolen I was built in 1864 to replace an older mill that had been destroyed by a fire in 1843. The mill worked in conjunction with two other mills to drain the Heerhugowaard and Raakmaatsboezem polders. In 1940, the Strijkmolen I was closed down, and converted to a dwelling. The Strijkmolen I is still used as a private home today, although some of its neighbours have recently been restored and re-opened. The mill is owned by the Schermer Mills Foundation.
