The Inlaatduiker Oude Spaarndammerpolder was constructed sometime around the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century. It is a part of the defence line which surrounds Amsterdam, and was constructed to protect the city and to ensure that there was a safe place for government and army officials to retreat to in times of war. The Inlaatduiker is a monument, and is protected by UNESCO. It is interesting as an example of the ingenious ways that Dutch people have been able to work with the water that once threatened their day to day existance.
