The Huis te Riviere Castle is also known as the Mathenesse Castle. It’s name translates to “House at the River”. The castle was built in 1258 for Lady Aleida van Henegouwen when she was appointed guardian of the young count Floris V. The castle has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the past six hundred years. The Schiedam local authorities have build a town hall near to the remains of the castle, and have flooded the area around the castle, making it inaccessible to visitors.
