The Damsluis to Heksloot near the Spaarne is located in Spaarndam – it is a part of the defence works that were put in place during the late 19th century, and is a testament to the hydraulic engineering talents of the Dutch people. The Damsluis was built in 1890, and is a part of the defence line that was used to keep parts of the country dry in times of peace, and allow them to be quickly flooded in times of war.
