The Grootepoldermolen was built in 1783, and was one of the mills responsible for the ’Grootepolder’ – a 460 hectare area of land. Polder mills were used to reclaim large, flat areas of land from the sea by pumping the water away from the land, which was protected by networks of dykes and canals. The Grootepoldermolen was bought by the Slochteren Mill Foundation in 1969. The mil is open to the public by appointment only.
