The Ruiten Mill was built in 1935 by mill makers A & K Dries of Woltersum, to replace a mill that had been destroyed in a fire the previous year. The mill was ran by the local Waterboard, and was responsible for draining a 410 hectare area of land. The mill was bought by the Slochteren Mill Foundation in 1968, and over the next five years a lot of restoration work was performed to bring the mill back to working order. Tours of the mill are available by appointment.
