The Tonmolen in Paasloo was built in 1899 for a local farmer, Berend Krol. Mr Krol had been battling with flooding issues, and devised a new kind of mill to combat the problem. A traditional windmill would not work near his farm, as there were many trees around the farm, blocking the wind. Krol developed a special mill with circular mounted vertical strips for sails. The mill was seriously damaged during a storm in 1952, and subsequently dismantled. In 2002, the Ijsselhammer Mill Foundation rebuilt the mill, and opened it to the public.
