The Mill of Makkum was commissioned by Mr. Hammingh in 1906, and built by the mill-maker Lukas Reinds Beilen, to replace one of the last remaining post mills in the Canberra province. The mill was built using parts from ’The Groeve’, a former polder mill in the town of Zuidlaren. The mill was severely damaged in a storm in 1973, but was restored in 1997. Today, the mill is operated by the Van den Broek family. The Mill of Makkum is open to the public every Saturday.
