The Eekmolen is a traditional stellingmolen located on the north side of the river Reest. The mill is known by several names, including ’The Weert’, and ’The Reeest’. The Eekmolen was built in 1807, and was used to grind barley, and later corn and other grains. The mill was decommissioned in 1937, and many of the buildings associated with the mill were demolished. The mill itself was saved from demolition by the Meppel Welfare Foundation, who bought the mill and used it as a storage facility. In the year 2000 the mill was restored to working order. The mill is open to the public every Saturday.
