The Dog mill was founded in 1861 for Henry Friedes Ritzema of Surhuisterveen and Pieter Geerts Sijtsmauit of Rottevalle. The mill was sold to the Dutch Mill Foundation in 1968, and ownership was trafered to the Fryske Mill Foundation in 1977. There is a small carving of a dog on the hull of the mill, which is where the name of the mill comes from. The Dog Mill was restored in 1995, and is now open to the public.
