The Commander’s Mill in Mechelen is also known as the Lower Mill. It is a water-powered turbine mill, and is used to grind flour for human consumption. It is also equipped with a small hydro-generator. The mill has a long history, with certain parts of it dating back to 1298. The mill was rebuilt in 1876, after a large proportion of it was destroyed by a fire. Until 2004, there was a small catering facility sharing the building. Today, the mill sells flour to the public, although orders must be made via telephone in advance.
