Makkum was historically the centre of the traditional Dutch ceramic manufacturing industry, and the items produced here can rival the more famous Delftware in quality. The Royal Tichelaar workshops offer regular guided tours, where visitors can watch ceramics being made – from the arrival of the clay at the factory, all the way through to final hand-painted earthenware product. There is a coffee shop available, and visitors can also browse through the factory shop to purchase tiles and earthenware items as gifts or souvenirs.
