The Fort in Penningsveer is a part of an old Defence Line which extends more than 130KM around Amsterdam. The Defence Line was built between 1883 and 1920, and the forts and locks around the country are now UNESCO protected monuments. The defence line is a testament to Dutch ingenuity and engineering skill – it is the only fortification in the world designed to direct the water away from populated land in times of peace, and flood strategic points just enough to make them impassable in times of war.
