The Oostermolen is the last remaining Wipmolen in Hoekse Waard. Wipmolens are the smallest kind of wind mill, and were used to drain water from the land to make small ’polders’ of inhabitable land. The Oostmolen was built in 1731, and was in active use until 1948. The mill was bought by the town in 1962, and currently serves as a pumping reserve for the polder. One room of the mill is an authentic millers home, decorated in traditional 1900s style.
