The ’Onderste Molen’, or ’Lower Mill’ is a 13th century watermill located on Hoofdstraat in the town of Mechelen. The mill was built in 1215, and was originally used as a paper mill. Today, the mill is owned by the ’Commandeuersmolen Schyns’ company. The mill was restored in 2004, and is used to generate hydroelectric power. The mill can generate around 200,000kWh of power a year. The Onderste Molen is also used as a venue for special parties during the month of December.
