The Nevenbatterij van het Fort bij Nigtevecht is a part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Work began on the defence line in 1880, and project took 40 years to complete. This particular battery was constructed in 1903. The defence line was a network of forts, batteries, pumps, and dykes, that was designed to defend Amsterdam by protecting important areas of the country, and allowing strategic points to be flooded to hamper the movement of invading troops. The defence line is now a Unesco protected monument.
