Montfort Castle was built in 1251 for Hendrik van Gelre. When Hendrik died in 1284, the castle fell into the posession of the Dukes of Gelre, who used the castle as their southern bastion. Count Reinoud I ordered the construction of a new keep near the entrance gate in 1285. He was then kept prisoner in that keep by his own son from 1320 until his death in 1326. The castle is was demolished during the 17th century, and the parts salvaged for use in construction work. The ruins of the castle are now owned by the Valkenburg Castle Association. Guided tours are available by appointment only.
