The Molen van Polder Westbroek is a traditional polder mill that was built in 1863 to drain the Westbroek polder an very large area of flat land. The mill served an area of around 1250 hectares. Polder mills had a very important part in Dutch history, and some of them are still in use today, proving the incredible efficiency of their design. Polder mills were used along with networks of locks and dikes to pump water out to sea, reclaiming land for the Dutch people to live on.
