The Grote Kerk in Naarden is one of the few buildings from the early 16th century that survived the Spanish attacks of 1572. The church has some beautiful vault paintings, based on drawings by Durer. The pictures, on 22 wooden panels, were painted between 1510 and 1518, and depict a number of scenes from both the Old and New Testaments. The church is also renowned for its incredible acoustics: every Easter there are several performances of Bach’s ‘St Matthew Passion’ held there.
