The Fort at Nieuwersluis is a former Dutch fort that was once a part of the New Water Line. The first water line was conceived by Maurice of Nassau in the late 16th century. The decision was made to modernise the defences, and make ’The New Water line’ after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The Fort at Nieuwersluis is one of many forts that make up this newer defence line. When the forts fell out of use after the Second World War, the Water Line became a popular tourist attraction – a tour of the Water Line takes visitors around many beautiful parts of the country, and military historians will be fascinated by the forts themselves.
