The De Zwaan wind mill is a non-working mill on the Binnenweg in Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. The De Zwaan mill was once used as a drainage mill, to drain areas of land called ’polders’ so that they were suitable for living on. The mill was constructed in 1638. Wind power was a very important part of 17th century Dutch life, and although this mill is no longer operational, it is still an interesting piece of architecture and a testament to the engineering talents of Dutch people throughout history.
