The De Hoop Mill in Oldebroek is a traditional 8-sided stellingmolen. It was built in 1853, and has been used as both a corn mill, and an oil mill. Stellingmolens are one of the most common kind of Dutch windmill – they are tall mills, with long, high sails, and a ’stelling’, or walkway around the middle of the mill, that allows the miller to safely reach the sails. The stellingmolen design is popular because the height of the sails allows them to catch more wind, and run in a wider range of weather conditions.
