The Comenius Museum in Naarden is devoted to Jan Amos Komenski, who lived from 1592 to 1670. He was a philosopher, cartographer, and educational reformer who was born in Moravia, which was at the time a part of the Holy Roman Empire. He was thrown out of the empire because of his Protestant beliefs, and moved to Amsterdam where he worked on improving education, and created, amongst other things, the world’s first picture book for children.
