The Westermolen was built in 1845 to serve the 400 hectare Oost and Westerkruisland polder. There were originally two mills serving the polders, but the smallest of the two has since been removed. The Westermolen faced demolition in the 1950s, but was saved by the Kollumerland town, who bought it in 1961, and restored it in 1984. The Westermolen can be seen in operation every Friday and Saturday, and is open to the public.
