The Skarmolen is a relatively modern windmill. It was built in 1920 using a U.S. Wind Engine design known as the Hercules Metallicus, for the company RS Stokvis & Zn of Rotterdam. This design of mill is fairly rare. It enjoyed some popularity at the start of the 20th century, but only a small number of mills using the Hercules Metallic design are still working today. The mill is now owned by the Nijefurd Mill Foundation. The Skarmolen was restored in 1999.
