The Overwaard Mill No. 2 is one of a group 18 mills in the Kinderdijk area. It was built in 1740, and was used as a polder mill – pumping water away from the land to keep it dry and inhabitable. In 1981 the mill was severely damaged in a fire caused by a malfunctioning gas stove. Restoration work began in 1984, after an extensive fund-raising operation gathered the 1.2 million guilders required to complete the work. The mill was back in operation by April 1985.
