The Stadhuis in Kampen is divided into two buildings, the Oude Raadhuis, and the Niew Raadhuis. The Oude Raadhuis dates back to 1542, and a has a classical red-bricked facade. Inside, visitors can view the Schepenzaal (’Magistrates’ Hall’) – a claustrophobic medieval construction with dark stained walls, and an impressive stone chimney-piece. Opposite the chimney-piece, on one of the pillars, is a malevolent satyr who appears to be laughing at the chimney. The satyr was the work of a local carpenter who was annoyed that he had not been commissioned for the chimney-piece job.
