The Municipal Museum of Leiden has been housed in the Lakenhal since 1874. The Lakenhal itself was built in 1640, and originally served as a clothmakers hall. The museum examines Dutch urban culture from the 16th century to the present day. Exhibits include paintings by 16th and 17 century artists such as Isaac van Swanenburgh, Rembrandt, Jan Steen, and Liedens. The museum also has a 16th century wool loom, and an assortment of silver, engraved glass, pewter, and tiles.
