The Lonnekermolen was built in 1851 to replace an older mill that had been severely damaged in a fire in 1847. The mill was decommissioned in 1916 because of severe decay, and was not repaiered until after the end of the First World War. Severe weather conditions caused more damage over the next few years, and in 1953 the owner of the mill could not afford to maintain it, so the mill was sold to the town of Enschede. In 1985 the mill was restored to working order, and the mill is now ran on a voluntary basis. It is open to the public every Wednesday and Saturday.
