Leerdam Castle is an 11th century castle standing on the confluence of two rivers; the river Linge and the river Leede. The castle served as an important part of the town’s defences until it was destroyed by Spanish invaders during the 80 Years War. The ruins of the castle were discovered during the restoration of the Hofje van Aerden – a women’s refuge which had been set up during the 18th century. The ruins of the castle have been consolidated, and the outer wall has been rebuilt. The ruins form part of the Hofje van Aerden Museum’s gardens, and are open to the public.
