The IJsselstein Castle is thought to have been built in the late 12th or early 13th century. The castle has seen a lot of combat. In 1297 it was under seige for a whole year when Gijsbrecht van Amstel, then Lord of IJsselstein, refused to allow the Count of Holland to use the castle. Other sieges took place in 1349, 1417, and 1510. In 1888 most of the castle was torn down. Today only one tower remains of the original building. The tower is now a part of the city museum.
